What is Synthesia MCP?

Synthesia MCP is our hosted server built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard that lets AI assistants securely call out to external tools. It gives MCP-compatible clients a curated set of tools for creating, generating, and finding Synthesia videos, grounded in your workspace's brand kit, templates, and avatars.

Because it's a standard MCP server, it works alongside the other connectors you already use in a conversation. Pull source material from Slack, Notion, or Drive and turn it into a video draft in the same chat.

What can you do with it?

Turn an idea or script into a video draft: describe a video, or paste an existing script, and the assistant creates a draft in Synthesia
Get a draft that already looks on-brand: drafts are built from your workspace's templates and avatars, so the first version already reflects your setup rather than a blank template
🆕 Pick a Style if you don't have a brand kit: choose one of Synthesia's curated Styles, or a template, in the setup widget
Pick your setup in-chat: an interactive widget lets you choose workspace, template, brand kit, and avatar before generation starts, then shows the draft as soon as it's ready
Generate the final video without leaving the chat: once a draft looks right, ask Claude or ChatGPT to generate it and follow render progress in the same conversation—no need to switch to the editor first
Finish or refine in the editor: every draft (and every generated video) also opens directly in the Synthesia editor if you want to make edits
Search your video library from the chat: look up existing videos, list and filter what you have access to, and pull metadata for a specific video
Chain it with other tools: combine it with any other MCP connector in the same conversation (for example: "summarize this doc from Notion and turn it into a video")

How it works

Synthesia MCP exposes a small, purpose-built set of tools rather than the full Synthesia API surface:

Note:
Creating a draft isn't instantaneous. Expect a short wait, typically 30-90 seconds, before it's ready to open in the editor. Generating the final video takes longer than creating a draft—about as long as generating that same video directly in Synthesia would.

If a tool doesn't show up yet:
When we add or change tools, most MCP clients still show the old list until you refresh. In Claude, restart the desktop or web app. In ChatGPT, ask your workspace admin to refresh the plugin from Settings → Plugins → Synthesia → Actions → Refresh.

Prerequisites

A Synthesia account on a Starter or Creator plan, or an enterprise Synthesia account in a workspace with login via WorkOS—if you're on an enterprise workspace, accounts still on the legacy Cognito sign-in need to migrate before they can connect:
- If you don't have SSO enabled for your organization (i.e. if you log in with your email and password), you should be fine
- If you log in via SSO and you're not sure which your organization uses for Synthesia, check with your IT admin
A Claude or ChatGPT workspace where an admin has already enabled the Synthesia connector—whether you need this depends on your Claude/ChatGPT plan, not your Synthesia plan. See Connect as a personal user or as a workspace admin and Connect as an enterprise workspace member below.

Connect as a personal user or as a workspace admin

Follow these steps if you're connecting Synthesia MCP to your own personal Claude or ChatGPT account, or if you're a workspace/organization admin setting it up for your team. If you're joining an enterprise workspace where an admin has already added Synthesia, skip to Connect as an enterprise workspace member instead.

The server is public at https://mcp.synthesia.io/mcp, so it should be reachable from your AI provider's cloud without any firewall or allowlisting changes on your end.

Claude

Personal accounts (not part of a company workspace):

Go to Customize → Connectors
Select the + button next to Connectors
Select Add custom connector
Enter a name and the server URL https://mcp.synthesia.io/mcp
Leave the OAuth client ID and secret fields empty—Synthesia authenticates via WorkOS, so no client credentials are needed
Select Add, then follow the connection prompts to sign in

Workspace or organization admins (Team/Enterprise):

Go to Organization settings → Connectors
Select Add, hover over Custom, then choose Web
Enter the server URL https://mcp.synthesia.io/mcp
Leave the OAuth client ID and secret fields empty
Select Add

Workspace members then connect individually from Customize → Connectors, by finding Synthesia (labeled Custom) and selecting Connect.

Note:
If we update the server's tool list or descriptions, refresh the connector from Settings → Connectors → Synthesia → Refresh. On Claude's Business plan, connectors can't be updated after publishing, so you'll need to recreate and republish to pick up changes.

ChatGPT

Synthesia is now listed in the ChatGPT marketplace, so Developer Mode is no longer required.

Open ChatGPT and go to Settings → Apps (or Plugins, depending on your account)
Find Synthesia and select Install plugin (or Connect)
Sign in to your Synthesia account and review the requested permissions
Confirm you can tag Synthesia in a message box, then try a prompt using it

Note:
On ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, or Edu workspaces, admins control whether Synthesia is enabled by default. If Synthesia shows Disabled by admin, ask your workspace admin to enable it from Workspace settings → Apps.

Connect as an enterprise workspace member

These steps are for members of an enterprise workspace where an admin has already enabled Synthesia MCP as an org-wide connector.

Claude

Open Claude Desktop or the Claude web app
Go to Settings → Connectors
Find Synthesia in the list of connectors and select Connect
A Synthesia window will open, where you can approve the permissions and sign in (your session is cached, so you won't be asked to approve every time)
Confirm the Synthesia connector appears under the connectors icon in the message box, then try a prompt using it

ChatGPT

Open ChatGPT and go to Settings → Apps (or Plugins)
Find Synthesia and select Connect
Sign in to your Synthesia account and review the requested permissions
Confirm you can tag Synthesia in a message box, then try a prompt using it

If Synthesia doesn't appear or shows Disabled by admin, your workspace admin needs to enable it from Workspace settings → Apps first.

Video search and listing tools are permission-scoped: you only see videos you already have access to in Studio.

Rate limits

To keep a runaway agent or scripted loop from generating an unbounded number of videos, Synthesia MCP applies per-user limits on how many drafts and video generations you can kick off per hour. Normal use shouldn't come close to these limits. If you do hit one, you'll get a clear message asking you to try again later, and nothing will be created in the meantime.

Things to know

Editing isn't supported yet: you can't edit an existing video, or refine a draft's script or visuals, from the connector—open it in the Synthesia editor to make those changes. You can still generate the finished video and watch its progress from the chat once the draft looks right.
Draft quality is still maturing: script-to-draft generation is an early integration with the Synthesia Assistant, so drafts may be rougher than what you'd get from the Assistant inside the platform itself
Search is keyword-based: search is not semantic and doesn't yet support filtering by date range
ChatGPT marketplace listing available; Claude still connector-only: Synthesia MCP is listed in the ChatGPT marketplace. It isn't listed in Claude's directory yet—connect there using the custom connector steps above
Draft creation is not instantaneous: a draft typically takes 30-90 seconds to generate
Only tested with Claude and ChatGPT: other MCP clients may work but aren't officially supported

FAQ

Which AI tools does it work with?

Claude and ChatGPT today. It's a standard MCP server, so in principle any MCP-compatible client can connect via the server URL, but we've only tested Claude and ChatGPT—treat other clients as experimental.

Why can't I sign in?

If you log into Synthesia via SSO, the most common cause is still being on the legacy Cognito sign-in rather than WorkOS.

SSO itself isn't required, so if you log in with an email and password, that means you authenticate via WorkOS, so it should work fine.

The other common cause is not having a qualifying Synthesia plan (Starter, Creator, or Enterprise). Check with your Synthesia account team if you're unsure.

Does it edit my videos?

No. It creates a draft, and can generate that draft into a finished video, but you make edits in the Synthesia editor. Editing existing videos or refining a draft's content from the connector isn't supported.

Does this consume credits in Synthesia?

Creating a draft doesn't consume credits. Generating the final video does, the same way it would if you started that video directly in Synthesia—credits are based on the video's duration. If you're on Enterprise, you have unlimited video generation, so no credits are consumed either way.

Will the draft match our branding?

On Enterprise plans, yes—drafts are built from your workspace's brand kit, templates, and avatars, so the first version already looks on-brand. On other plans, drafts are built from a Style or template you choose in the setup widget instead. You'll typically still make some adjustments in the editor either way.

Does generating a video through the connector cost extra?

No. Generating a video via Synthesia MCP works the same way as generating it directly in Synthesia.

Is it on the Claude or ChatGPT marketplace?

Yes, on ChatGPT. It's not yet listed in Claude's directory—connect there using the server URL and the custom connector steps above.
